I knew this before, but needed to refresh my own mind, and share it with others.

Ask the AKC Animal Behaviorist - How Do I Make My Puppy Stop Biting?

Meet Mary Burch, American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Director and Paw Nation's expert columnist addressing your questions on animal behavior. Dr. Burch has over 25 years of experience working with dogs, and she is one of fewer than 50 Certified Applied Animal Behaviorists based in the United States. She is the author of 10 books, including the new official book on the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program, "Citizen Canine: 10 Essential Skills Every Well-Mannered Dog Should Know."

I've just adopted a 6-month-old puppy named Max from a shelter. I'm starting from scratch with his training, but unlike the last dog I adopted, Max likes to bite. He will nip during playtime, and he really bites when someone does something he doesn't like. He hasn't drawn blood yet, but I worry about what will happen when he gets older and bigger. How can I teach him to not bite?

It's hard to believe how much those needle-like tiny teeth can hurt when a rambunctious puppy nips you -- and of course the injury potential from dog bites increases as the dog gets older. You are right to be concerned. Let me help by explaining a bit about puppy socialization and offer you first steps to take to curb Max's biting ways.

One of the most important lessons a puppy learns from his mother is how to to control the intensity of a bite. This is called bite inhibition and in the litter, if the puppies bite while nursing, the dam (mother) will nip them or stand up and walk away, taking the breakfast buffet with her.

The dam isn't the only one who teaches a puppy not to bite. When puppies are playing with their siblings, if a puppy gets wound up and bites too hard, the sibling will jump up and yelp. She may leave the game as if to say, "Don't do that! That hurts!" The puppy soon learns if he wants the fun game to continue, he cannot bite too hard.

Now it's your turn. When Max bites, loudly say, "Ouch!" This lets him know that biting is not okay. Don't jerk your hand away if he has his teeth on you because this could tear your skin. Instead show that just as with a puppy's mom and siblings would do, you are going to retreat from the game if he bites. Behaviorally, this is a timeout from what he wants -- time and attention from you.

During your play sessions, work on teaching Max to respond to the word "easy" as you say it quietly and gently. You can give him some food rewards for gentle play. Keep in mind that while nipping a person is not acceptable, puppies do need to chew as a part of the teething process. Make sure Max has access to safe chewy toys.

It's great that you are working on training Max. If you aren't in one already, you might consider a basic obedience class. You'll be able to learn more tips from the instructor, and put Max on the road to being well socialized. A well-socialized, well-trained adult dog usually doesn't bite -- which makes for a happier and safer situation for everyone. And it sounds like you are heading in the right direction. Check out the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program or other training programs in your area.

The Blessing of Israel to the World.

Some people and orgs have tried hard to dissuade me concerning my bible taught feelings on Israel being a BIG piece of the Christian World View puzzle, and in the near future. In the Progressive-Liberal "news/ media" folks won't be able to figure out why real Christians are so excited about recent events in Israel and her hostile neighbors. ONLY bible study and the Holy Spirit can help us understand the true nature and meaning of the present and future events that must come true. Just as people laughed at Noah and his family while building the Ark-- so too, Christians will be mocked and laughed at right now in 2010! Do the worldly unbelievers know or care about the Bible? Ha! Shake your head, "NO."
And then there are our friends and relatives who like and respect us and the Word that we teach and share, but just don't have the motivation to move a muscle and accept the Christ and then practice true Christianity in their own lives. And they are also probably in the "Ostrich position."

I say:' Don't be too choked up, angry, disappointed or frustrated', my friends and fellow Soldiers in Christ..... I have have loved ones too who choose NOT to accept the Lord. After you do all that you can humanly do for the Lord's work-- you just have to put it all in God's hands. We cannot read the heart-- but God can and does. Do your best and let it go!

I must post more on the 'great apostasy' that is in progress now, and how it WILL mess up many of our minds, unless we trust in the Lord and understand that there will be many false prophets, teachers, loved and revered prominent men coming out of the wood work. People who wrote wonderful books, etc., are joining Satan's ranks and are showing their true colors in these last days, just like the Bible said would happen. So don't be too surprised, but stay very close to the Lord and the Bible! I have personally seen really BIG preachers fall, and stumble many, splintering churches, big time. Beware, and hunker down. I will have to touch on that subject more another time.

Click on the video, and then ask yourself WHY aren't the Islamic/ Muslim nations still in the the basic, ancient, 'stone hammer' era, with the majority hungry and illiterate? Why are they so hateful and violent? Why is the USA's current administration turning against Israel and taking sides with Islam?

Israeli F-16

Dear Thomas

The above photograph shows the Israeli flag and an Israeli F-16 fighter.

As we see natural Israel under increasing threat and attack by what seems to be overwhelming forces (Islam, the UN, and much of the world), we need to remind ourselves of God's protection and promises to natural Israel, even in her present unbelief in her Messiah, Jeshua (Jesus).

The following 3 minute video clearly documents the blessing of the Jew and Israel to the world. And the following Scriptures speak of God's protection and promises to restore all Israel to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Important Scriptures for understanding Israel:
(The woman described in Revelation Chapter 12 is Israel, the male child is Jesus, the dragon is Satan, the rest of her offspring are the Body of Christ.)

"When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent's reach. Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring--those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus." Revelation 12:13-17

The Apostle Paul's understanding of the Jewish people:
"I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins." As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable. Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God's mercy to you. For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all." Romans 11:25-32

Pray for and support Israel. It seems clear to me that, as a nation, Israel now has a clearer understanding of good and evil than the United States.

Pray for America to support Israel, and for America to regain her historic Christian values. Eventually, it will be too late, as a nation, to go back. When godless forces assume absolute control of America, night will be upon us, and the freedom that has allowed the gospel to rapidly cover the earth the past few centuries will come to an end.

It is cowardice to justify retreat from involvement in preserving national freedom, a precious gift from God, until retreat is the only recourse for survival. And only then if survival is still courageous and prudent for the sake of the gospel. It is clearly national freedom, built upon the Lord Jesus Christ, and Christian civilization, that has enabled the gospel, in a few hundred years, to go to the uttermost parts of the world. And the "free world" graciously established by God, has provided whatever limited freedom Christians have in the Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Communist worlds. (Were it not for the prayers of the saints, and their efforts contacting U.S. government officials, and the following pressure from the US State Department, the recent release of two precious Iranian young women would never have taken place. They would have been beheaded or hung for their Christian faith.)

We must persevere, not for our sake, but for the sake of Christians throughout the world, for the sake of the Kingdom of G
