Obama's Gun Ban List is Out.

Tom's Journal. http://tomschuckmanjournal.blogspot.com/ tschuckman@aol.com

PLEASE SHARE THIS IMPORTANT INFO with every real, live American that loves Freedom, that you can.  Thank You.

Beware!

NOW IT IS BEGINNING TO GET SERIOUS. IT'S TIME TO CALL OR WRITE TO YOUR CONGRESSMAN OR CONGRESSWOMAN. ONCE THIS IS PASSED, THERE WILL BE NO RECALL. YOUR GUNS WILL BE GONE OR YOU WILL BE IN PRISON. NO WAY TO DEFEND YOUR HOME EXCEPT WITH HAND TO HAND COMBAT OR A BASEBALL BAT. OBAMA AND HIS BAND OF THIEVES WANT YOU TO BE AT THEIR MERCY AND HAVE NO WAY TO DEFEND YOURSELF.
A MAN WITH A GUN IS A CITIZEN, WITHOUT A GUN, YOU ARE A SLAVE TO HIS WISHES.
I ASK YOU TO SEND THIS TO ALL ON YOUR LIST AND DO LIKEWISE.
Obama's Gun Ban List Is Out
AlanKorwin - Author Gun Laws Of America GunLaws.com
Here it is,folks, and it is bad news. The framework for legislation is always laid, and theDemocrats have the votes to pass anything they want to impose upon us. Theyreally do not believe you need anything more than a brick to defend your homeand family. Look at the list and see how many you own. Remember, it isregistration, then confiscation. It has happened in the UK, in Australia, inEurope, in China, and what they have found is that for some reason the criminalsdo not turn in their weapons, but will know that you did.
Remember, the first step in establishing a dictatorship is to disarm thecitizens.
Gun-ban list proposed. Slipping below the radar (orunder the short-term memory cap), the Democrats have already leaked a gun-banlist, even under the Bush administration when they knew full well it had nochance of passage (HR 1022, 110th Congress). It serves as a framework for thenew list the Brady's plan to introduce shortly. I have an outline of the Brady'scurrent plans and targets of opportunity. It's horrific. They're going after thecourts, regulatory agencies, firearms dealers and statutes in an all-out effort to restrict we the people. They've made little mention of criminals. Now more than ever, attention to the entire Bill of Rights is critical. Gun bans will impact our freedoms under search and seizure, due process, confiscated property, states' rights, free speech, right to assemble and more, in addition to theSecond Amendment. The Democrats current gun-ban-list proposal (final list will be worse):

Attorney General gets carteblanche to ban guns at will: Under the proposal, the U.S. Attorney General canadd any "semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or lawenforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is notparticularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the AttorneyGeneral."
Note that Obama's pick for this office, EricHolder, wrote a brief in the Heller case supporting the position that you haveno right to have a working firearm in your own home. In making this determination, the bill says, "there shall be a rebuttable presumption that afirearm procured for use by the United States military or any law enforcementagency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and shall not bedetermined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because thefirearm is suitable for use in a sporting event." In plain English this meansthat ANY firearm ever obtained by federal officers or the military is notsuitable for the public.
The last part is particularlyclever, stating that a firearm doesn't have a sporting purpose just because it can be used for sporting purpose -- is that devious or what? And of course, "sporting purpose" is a rights infringement with no constitutional or historicalsupport whatsoever, invented by domestic enemies of the right to keep and beararms to further their cause of disarming the innocent.

Drinking.

Tom's Journal. http://tomschuckmanjournal.blogspot.com/ tschuckman@aol.com

I will call out anyone who lies, including those who claim to represent God and the Bible...but speak and teach contrarily.... and just want all to know the truth about drinking, moderation, etc., and sobriety.  I chose to remain sober  -- but the Bible doesn't condemn drinking in moderation -- but drunkenness.  Personally, the less I drink, the better I feel.

The Bible doesn't say anything about smoking because they didn't have the habit back then -- but the principle is:  Would  you pollute your neighbor's air supply?   I refuse to input my own personal feelings about that subject, and a few of my close friends still have the habit -- and I love them anyway.  Never hate the sinner -- hate the sin.  Yet, that smoke has powerful drugs in it that can hook you and it costs a lot of money these days.  I will leave that dog lie for now.... and we all have bad habits that we ought to quit, I guess.  I just don't care to breath it in my own lungs, as I also use oxygen to help me sleep at night with my SLEEP APNEA and COPD challenges.

I just want to be hooked on 'Love for the Lord.'

Excessive Use Of Alcohol?

Q. In Paul’s short letter to Titus, he mentions 4 times that the people should be sober (Titus 1:8, 2:2, 2:6, 2:12). But in his letter to Timothy, Paul mentions that it is okay to drink a little wine (1 Timothy 5:23). Did the people of Crete have a problem with drinking alcohol in excess? Are born-again Christians considered backslid if they drink alcohol in excess?

A. As far as I know the people of Crete were no more inclined toward the excessive use of alcohol than anyone else.
Of the four verses you cite only Titus 2:2 refers specifically to the use of alcoholic beverages. The Greek word in that verse can mean anything from totally abstaining to restricting oneself to moderate use only. In Titus 1:8, 2:6, 2:12 Paul used a different Greek word which means to be sober minded, of sound mind, or discrete. Additionally, in Titus 1:8 Paul was referring to prospective elders, in Titus 2:6 his topic was young men, and in Titus 2:12 he was addressing believers in general.
While the Bible doesn’t prohibit the use of alcohol in moderation, Paul did speak clearly against habitual drunkenness (1 Cor. 5:11).

Holy Spirit.

Tom's Journal. http://tomschuckmanjournal.blogspot.com/ tschuckman@aol.com

Some of the topics I choose to post are about things that really interest ME, and this is also a way for me to 'ear mark' them. The Holy Spirit has mystified me in past times -- mainly because I got sucked into a cult after I got back from Vietnam -- and was looking for the 'Real Truth' ....  beware of the JW - cult !  I know that they hate me and would love to see me 'vanish' because I was hurt and abused by their cult -- like so many others -- and just think about how many they lead to hell !  A lot of blood guilt is on their head, and many of the 'older ones' in their Org. know that -- but they risk losing ALL THEIR FAMILY AND FRIENDS IF THEY QUIT OR WALK AWAY!!  I had guts enough to make just that move, and start my life all over again.  PTL.  OK, I was never a saint or walked the straight and narrow, but the truth is the truth, and the Bible has that truth -- IF you choose to use the KJV Bible!  And if it seems like a foreign language because of the Old English -- LEARN IT !!  The 'New World Translation' published by the JW's is messed up royally in the Greek Scriptures [ New Testament], and when you put two different bibles side by side, you can readily tell the difference. Best to check out the DEFINED KJV Bible -- see: biblefortoday.org

Anyway, the JW church of the poisoned mind clan will try to tell you that the Holy
Spirit is "God's active force."  Not the 3rd person of the Trinity. True, the bible doesn't use the term trinity-- but we use that 'device' to help us figure things out... as just and aid.  God also uses 'human physical ideas and forms to describe Himself -- or... how else could He make us understand all His attributes and qualities.  I am sure that some JW -minded people will 'beg to differ' and cause problems...  but my 22  years with their ilk has made me sick enough to 'toss my cookies' with all their hypocrisy  and lies.  They have destroyed so many lives and their cult is riddled with suicide and despair.  Sorry to be so graphic.  If they want to take my head -- let them come.. fine. I am an old, disabled, Vietnam Veteran, and death would take away a lot of physical pain, and put me in heaven for sure... thank  you very much.

In fact a new type of VA medication is tearing up my poor old stomach to pieces, and I need to find some kind of 'buffer' to shield it before I bleed to death some day.   "Better living through chemicals"  Ha!  The new med helps my knees but kills my belly, so that I don't even want to eat.  I hate milk, so I just eat some butter bread at this point.

So Winter has finally come up North where I live with a nice cold wind-- and for some reason, I just don't feel ready for it this year.  Poor circulation in my legs, and I guess I need to buy some long johns and wool socks, I guess.  Old age....  duh.  As a studied herbalist, I already take red pepper and ginger for the last 200 years... lol. Garlic has helped keep me alive, as heart disease runs in my family.

Something came over me -- most likely the Holy Spirit.. so that I called a few relatives and offered the olive branch on Thanksgiving, in a spirit of good will and peace.  If  you want to call that 'covering my anatomy' -- fine, but I hate to be enemies forever, and just maybe the other person might be inclined to find the Lord in these last days.  Remember -- the wise ones say that God "allowed" obama to win again, and maybe because the 'dirt storm' that is hitting us will wake some folks up, finally.  People sometimes turn to God when a big time adversity befalls them.  That is what it took to get  my attention back in 1994-5.  That is when I finally got down on my knees and begged God to show me the way.  And He did!  It didn't happen all at once, but He used a few key people to slip me some material to help me exit that dreaded JW-cult and see the light-- the real truth.  Many of us learn in increments -- step by step... so that the Bible that we read, and DON'T UNDERSTAND right off -- WILL MAKE SENSE LATER!  But the main thing is to get Saved NOW, and be included in that number of God's 'Church' [Congregation] that is destined to be in heaven!!  Get it?  That, of course, takes humility, which most folks on earth lack, and are too puffed up and full of themselves to attain...  sorry.  That is why I love the Psalms so much, as they talk about the two side of the coin -- humility, and pride.

Maybe I can go to sleep now...  after I check my pals on FB.

Warm Regards,
Tom

How Can I Know The Holy Spirit Is In Me?

Q. I’ve been a believer since I was little and now I’m having trouble because after a life changing experience I’ve realized that in the past I may not have believed it in my heart after all. I have problems knowing if the Holy Spirit is guiding me. I’ve always felt bad when sinning because I knew it was wrong, but there have been times in my life when I sinned knowingly and didn’t care. Since I didn’t care, was I saved?

A. You know the Holy Spirit is in you because in three places the Lord promised you that He is. (Ephes. 1:13-14, 2 Cor. 1:21-22 and 2 Cor 5:5) Every believer sins knowingly from time to time, and then like you feels sad about it later. That’s the Holy Spirit convicting us, and moving us to confess so we can be forgiven and restored to fellowship. When believers sin it doesn’t mean they aren’t saved. Even the great Paul said that no matter how hard he tried He couldn’t stop sinning (Romans 7:18-20).
The Holy Spirit is an adviser, a counselor who will guide you but you have to learn to listen for His voice. Some people who are very busy or have difficulty relaxing find that to be easier said than done. If that’s your problem take some time each day to just be still and ask Him to speak to you. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Important Note.

Tom's Journal. http://tomschuckmanjournal.blogspot.com/ tschuckman@aol.com

"Do you have a gun in the house ?"

Important !!

If yes, know how to answer, if asked!

When I had my gangrene gallbladder taken out and spent 10 days in the hospital for what should have been an overnight stay the insurance company kicked me out. I had home nurse visits for two weeks and was asked if I had guns in the house. I respond that if I did I would not tell them. So the below has some merit.

FYI, I am passing this along:
These are comments from two other people I have also been asked if we keep guns in the house. The nurse just kind of slipped it in along with all the other regular questions.

I told her I refused to answer because it was against the law to ask.

Everyone, whether you have guns or not, should give a neutral answer so they have no idea who does and who doesn't. My doctor asked me if I had guns in my house and also if any were loaded. I, of course, answered yes to both questions. Then he asked why I kept a loaded gun close to my bed. I answered that my son, who is a certified gun instructor and also works for Homeland Security, advised me that an unloaded, locked up gun is no protection against criminal attack.

The Government now requires these questions be asked of people on Medicare, and probably everyone else.

Just passing this along for your information: I had to visit a doctor other than my regular doctor when my doctor was on vacation.. One of the questions on the form I had to fill out was: Do you have any guns in your house?? My answer was None of your damn business!!

So it is out there! It is either an insurance issue or government intervention. Either way, it is out there and the second the government gets into your medical records (as they want to under
Obamacare) it will become a major issue and will ultimately result in lock and load!!

Please pass this on to all the other retired guys and gun owners...
Thanks. From a Vietnam Vet and retired Police Officer: I had a doctors appointment at the local VA clinic yesterday and found out something very interesting that I would like to pass along. While going through triage before seeing the doctor, I was asked at the end of the exam, three questions: 1. Did I feel stressed? 2. Did I feel threatened? 3.
Did I feel like doing harm to someone?

The nurse then informed me that if I had answered yes to any of the questions I would have lost my concealed carry permit as it would have gone into my medical records and the VA would have reported it to Homeland Security.

Looks like they are going after the vets first. Other gun people like retired law enforcement will probably be next. Then when they go after the civilians, what argument will they have? Be forewarned and be aware.

The Obama administration has gone on record as considering veterans and gun owners potential terrorists. Whether you are a gun owner, veteran or not,

If you know veterans and gun owners, please pass this on to them. Be very cautious about what you say and to whom.

They are coming for us, so unless you're an ostrich, do not stick your head in the sand.

As Operation Pillar of Defense entered its sixth day on Monday, momentum toward a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas was gathering pace as an international mediation effort, led by Egypt, was working on a draft agreement that would put an end to the fighting. Holy Spirit.

Tom's Journal. http://tomschuckmanjournal.blogspot.com/ tschuckman@aol.com

I was always very interested in learning more about the Holy Spirit, so here is some more great stuff.

I have been just a bit anxious lately because my wife, Terri, might be going back to work soon, and that will change me life a bit.  I will try to cook more and make things easier on her, if I can.  I just started taking another medication to help my arthritis and it works but makes me drowsy, so I must be on guard if I drive.  I just may cut the dosage, but this new facet came to me at the right time, PTL.  Thank  you, Lord.  And I am going to have some physical therapy at the VA soon to see if they can straighten my right knee that the Milwaukee VA totally messed up in their 'operation' 2 years ago.  What a bunch of losers who also abused me!  Ask me for details if you need to know more, and beware!  I feel that it's my JOB to help and warn other Vets about dangers at the VA...  and just wait until obama-care comes to America... lol.  Then you all will understand exactly what I mean by these words.

For some reason I am just not ready to the cold Winter U.P. here, and I am chilly too often, and just wonder how else I should dress to keep warm, even in the house.  Terri loves it ice cold all the time, but she is sympathetic and kind to me.  I love her dearly.
I am also feeling the pinch of a really poor economy where my income doesn't buy as much as it used to -- although I know that I am truly blessed compared to most other folks on planet earth.   I know that I am spending less and don't NEED much more of anything to be happy.  Yet I want to be a good steward and manager of my [our] money and resources.  I like to help folks -- but I feel I ought to be teaching them how to manage money better so I don't need to help them so much.  Just learn to live on less, and start with 10% less.... and that I learned from working with Finance at PFS Investments 20 years ago.   Don't worry -- things will get worse, and Murphy's Law is still very much alive.  But know this:  NO HUMAN OR COMPANY COULD RUN LIKE OUR GOV'T DOES AND NOT FAIL !!!  Sorry that I don't feel sorry for anyone who has troubles -- but voted for obama.  First of all, how could anyone who 'calls themselves Christian vote for someone who champions ABORTION and the Gay Agenda ??  Just believing that God exists is not going to save you!

I have noticed that most folks U.P. here in the far North of MI seem to be more kind, respectful and reverent, and at least open to listening to Bible oriented news and opinions.

I urge you to check out Chick publications, to get some great witnessing tools in the form of 'comic books' that teach the Bible.  Small booklets and tracts that you may purchase and then give away to people who need to hear the truth of the Bible and Salvation!

Warm Regards,
Tom

The Holy Spirit, In Us And Upon Us

Q. Recently, our pastor gave a message on the Holy Spirit regarding the Greek words ‘en’ and ‘epi’ (the Holy Spirit being ‘in’ a Christian and ‘upon’ a Christian) and said there was a difference. He explained that ‘en’ happened at the time of salvation, which I already knew, of course, but the ‘epi’ , I had not heard of before happened when a Christian had a deeper relationship with Christ and then would receive miracles and blessings. I know blessings happen when we are in fellowship with Christ. I didn’t know about the Holy Spirit being upon us as different from being in us. I would like your thoughts on this and did I understand him correctly?

A. Three Greek words are used to define the role of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life. Para means “with” and applies to everyone before the Resurrection. Eperchomai (a compound form of epi and erchomai) means to “come upon” and describes events in Acts 2, Acts 10:44, and Acts 19:6, resulting there in the manifestation of tongues. En means “in” and refers to the result of having heard and believed the Gospel, as in Ephesians 1:13-14.
Taken together, these passages agree that the Lord sealed the Holy Spirit within you at the moment of belief, determined what gift(s) you would need to make your unique contribution to the body, and invested you accordingly. From time to time, for His own purposes, He might also cause the Holy Spirit to “come upon” you to perform a special assignment.

Pray for Jerusalem.

Tom's Journal. http://tomschuckmanjournal.blogspot.com/ tschuckman@aol.com

Below is a snippet of a fine web page that I get sent to me, as I am interested in Israel big time -- because what goes on there has a DIRECT bearing on us here in the USA, BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

I know and remember a lot about sirens going off as a 'early warning system' we had in Vietnam...  especially my 1st tour there in 1968, right after the Big Tet Offensive when people were still very nervous as the war kicked up and we all lost many soldiers.  We would get rocketed by the Viet Cong mostly at night, but also in the day time, and every one took over by running into our bunkers or just jumping in a near by ditch or laying down on mother earth.  The problem was usually that the sirens went off AFTER THE ATTACK!!  One time one of the guys in the same tent I was living in [for 8 long months] had an expensive tape recorder that he left on when we were attacked, and when it was over he rewound it and it played the siren all over again.  We all thought it was another attach and ran out of the tent for a 2nd time-- we were so edgy.  One of the worse times I had living in Bien Hoa Air Base in South Vietnam, was the time that our Aviation Company took 3- 122 mm rockets in the middle of our compound, killing 3 soldiers and wounding 13.  It was nasty and bloody, and a real wake up call that we were in deed at war with a serious enemy... as I served with USARV [United States Army Vietnam] Division/ Group.  My 2nd tour was with the 240th AHC, @ Camp BearCat, RVN, and that was when I served as a helicopter door gunner for one year.
So, after I got home at last and out of the Army, the sound of sirens still bothered me a lot and made me nervous enough to want to hit the dirt and take cover-- just an automatic reaction many combat Veterans still have.  Just like ringing a bell every time you feed your dog -- begins to set off his salivary glands thing.  Pavlov's dogs theory.  What once was a survival technique still stays with us old dogs... lol.  Some myopic people may laugh at us, because they have never tasted fear and combat... and we Vets laugh at them too for being so darn ignorant when they get killed for their lack of knowledge and wisdom.  So too is our 'fear of the Lord'...  not that we Real Christian have a 'morbid fear' of God that He will strike us down for sinning with a bolt of lightning, but we fear to let him down with our constant imperfections and sins, because we LOVE Him!  "The fool has said there is no God."

And did you know that about 8 million so called 'born again Christians' [and I use that term loosely] voted to re-elect obama ???  Even with the knowledge that obama fully supports the Gay agenda, Gays in the Army, Gay marriage, tax payer funded abortion on demand, and many more ilks and immoral ideas!  Don't worry folks -- there is a culpability attached to voting this way called a 'community responsibility.'  If you willing take side and support an immoral person and their ideas -- are you not sharing in his/ her sin ?  So, what ever comes down the pike now is a direct result of the MAJORITY of Americans who want it that way!  It's one thing to be deceived and make an error -- but quite another to vote for someone who is a well know liar, with eyes wide open!    Lest anyone bemoan our upcoming thrashing and pain/ sorrow, let us all understand that We, collectively asked for it!
However, My Camp of fundamentalist bible loving Christians all over the world believe that we will be Raptured before the real stuff hits the fan...  so why worry too much?  Of course hard times and bad economy will fall on us hard enough and soon-- I believe right after Christmas time...

My wife goes back to work after Thanksgiving, we hope, although her foot is still on the mend.  I am happy to be her safety net and support.  That's what hubbies are for, right?

Why am I feeling like I am not ready for Winter yet?  Ha!  I am fat enough but still cold too often, even as I have nice clothes to wear...  hummmm.

My new diet seems to be working now after I gave up drinking soda pop and eating less.  And it was the local VA in Iron Mtn., MI that helped me understand that my blood sugar is too high and something had to be done immediately.  So maybe we will save a few bucks now too.  My money doesn't seem to go very far these days, but I try to pay down my bills by giving them an extra hundred bucks extra.   So many families have it worse than us, and losing their jobs now that obama-care is here to fleece us with poor health care --  and we who depend on the VA know what sub-standard care is... and I wish more civilians could have a taste of the stuff the Gov't dishes out to us...  because that is exactly what they will get soon!
Time for me to eat some fruit for breakfast.

Warm Regards,
Tom

Shabbat Shalom Thomas!
Welcome to Toldot (Generations), this week’s Parsha (Torah Portion).
Thomas, our ministry staff in Tel Aviv have has to go into the bomb shelters for a second day.

Last night, the sirens sounded, and our Bibles For Israel ministry staff had 60 seconds to get to a bomb shelter. "It was frightening to me and the kids, I thought I was going to have a heart attack when the sirens went off. The sound was chilling to the core of my being. We dropped everything and ran for the shelter. I thought Tel Aviv was safe, but obviously not," said Joseph.

It was the first time in 20 years, (since Saddam Hussein sent Scud missiles into Tel Aviv), that the sirens blared across the city as missiles were launched from Gaza into Tel Aviv.

Today on Friday afternoon, we just completed this Torah portion for you to read, when the sirens went off again! Another bomb launched all the way from Gaza blew up in Tel Aviv. The public bomb shelters have now been opened and people are running from cafes, and in the streets. People driving had to stop their cars, get out, lie down, and put their hands over their heads to protect themselves.

Shabbat is almost upon us here in Holy Land, though we are not going to have a Shabbat Shalom (Peace on the Sabbath), as we will not be able to go to sleep as the sirens can blast at any moment.
As we send this off to you, more missiles are coming this way.
Please pray for Israel and support our ministry in every way that you can.

TOLDOT (Generations)
Genesis 25:19-28:9; Malachi 1:1-2:7; Romans 9:1-13
“And these are the generations [toldot] of Isaac [Yitzchak], Abraham's son.” (Genesis 25:19)

This young man is reading the Torah using a yad (Torah pointer) to keep
his place in the passage of Scripture.

Last week, Parsha Chayei Sarah (Life of Sarah) began with the death of Sarah at 127. For a burial place, Abraham purchased the Cave of Machpelah, despite being offered the land for free.
Parsha Toldot (Generations) begins with a description of the generations of Isaac, Abraham and Sarah's son.
It’s interesting that Isaac wasn’t born until his mother and father’s names were changed from Sarai to Sarah and Abram to Abraham. This change in their names was accomplished with the addition of the Hebrew letter hey, which is often used as an abbreviated form of the name of God.

And so, with the inclusion of the supernatural power and presence of God in his life, Abraham and Sarah finally saw the fulfillment of God’s promise of a son.

We’re no different than Abraham or Sarah. By ourselves, we can do nothing (John 15:5). But when God gets involved, nothing is impossible!!

Esau and Jacob Presented to Isaac, by Benjamin West
But it wasn't only Abraham and Sarah that had difficulty conceiving. When Isaac (Yitzchak) took Rebecca (Rivkah) as his wife, he was 40 years old.

(Forty is a significant number in the Bible—Moses led the people for 40 years in the wilderness; it rained for 40 days and nights… the list goes on.)

But Rebecca was barren.

It is not coincidental that both Abraham’s wife and Isaac’s wife had difficulty conceiving, and this very fact displays the power of God in our lives. Not only were their children conceived through His supernatural intervention, but they were set apart to fulfill a special destiny.

The Power of a Husband’s Prayer

“Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebecca became pregnant.” (Genesis 25:21)

For Rebecca to finally conceive, her husband had to come to God in prayer.

Considering the Middle Eastern cultural emphasis on the blessing of children and the terrible shame attached to barrenness, we can be quite certain that Rebecca would have been on her knees regularly praying fervently for God’s intervention when month after month after month went by with no pregnancy.

And yet God chose not to act until her husband, Isaac, got on board and entreated God on his wife’s behalf.

Of course, this is not to say that God won’t answer our petitions if we have no husband, or if our husbands fail to pray for us. Not at all!

But this definitely encourages husbands to be faithful in their role as their wife’s spiritual and prayer covering.

Oftentimes, a wife is praying and praying for changes in her family, her marriage, her children, or even herself – but nothing seems to be happening. Could it be that God is waiting for the husband, as the cohen (priest) of the home to petition the heavens for an answer?

Destiny, Dysfunction and Sibling Rivalry

"And Isaac loved Esau because he did eat of his venison: but Rebecca loved Jacob.” (Genesis 25:28)

During her pregnancy, Rebecca experienced a violent struggle in her womb. When she asked the Lord what was going on in there, He told her that two nations (goyim) and two peoples (amim) were in her womb.

God prophesied that even from the womb, there would be separation and mutual antagonism between brothers. Talk about sibling rivalry!

God also said that the elder one would serve the younger. Esau was born first. He was red (adom in Hebrew) and hairy all over, which seems to foreshadow his future love for hunting and the shedding of blood.

"Now the first came forth, red all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.” (Genesis 25:25)

The name Esau in Hebrew means “hairy” and is a word play on Seir, the region in which he and his descendants settled (Joshua 24:4).

Western (Wailing) Wall in Jerusalem.
Jacob (Ya’akov) was born grasping Esau’s heel (ekev), a foreshadowing, perhaps, of his desire to grasp his brother’s birthright. The Hebrew word ekev means the heel of the foot but also means to follow. This word also can have the connotation of deception.
Notice that the boy’s destinies were sealed in the womb even before birth!

Rebecca knew that second-born Jacob was God’s choice to inherit the birthright, even though that blessing usually goes to the firstborn.

Perhaps because Rebecca knew Jacob's destiny, he became her favorite. He was a bit of a mama’s boy – quiet, and a bit of a homebody – a boy so easy for a mother to love.

Esau, however, was his father’s favorite. He seemed to be the typical man’s man, and naturally, his dad enjoyed the venison Esau brought home after the hunt.

Later, we see that Jacob, who should have known better, perpetuated this family dysfunction by favoring Joseph, son of his beloved wife, Rachel, over the sons of Leah. How often we see the sins of the fathers visited upon the children.
Favoritism causes problems in the family, and we should take heed not to play the game of favorites in our own families.

Despising the Birthright

“And these are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites in the hill-country of Seir.” (Genesis 36:9)

One day, when Esau came in from the field, he found Jacob cooking a red (adom) lentil stew.

Esau was so famished that when Jacob offered to trade some stew for Esau’s birthright, he agreed. This is also why Esau is nicknamed Edom (red) in Scripture.

Esau, like some people today, thought only of his immediate desire (he was hungry), rather than considering the future consequences of giving in to his appetite.

Jacob used no manipulation, trickery or deceit in obtaining this birthright. His request did, however, reveal Esau’s fickle, fleshy, and immature character, which rendered him unqualified and undeserving.

We learn from this that we can’t allow our feelings and appetites to rule us. Our emotions and physical needs must not become our masters. Otherwise, just like Esau, those Christians who fail to control their appetites will likely not fulfill their desired destinies or inherit the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21; see also Romans 8:6).

his birthright for a hearty bowl of lentil stew that his twin brother
Jacob had made.

Famine: No Match for the Blessing of God

“And there was a famine in the land…” (Genesis 26:1)

In Genesis 26, when Isaac found himself in the midst of a famine, the Lord appeared to him and warned him not to go down to Egypt, but to stay put and keep trusting in His provision for him and his family.

How often are we tempted to give up and move on when we experience a ‘famine’ in our circumstances? But we should move only if God says to move and stay if He commands us to stay.

The Bible promises that God is well able to provide in a famine or drought when we continue to trust in Him:
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is in the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7, 8)
