Foreword in Danish:

Hej gode danskere,
Venlig hilsen

As another summer slowly dies, colder weather is going to start creeping its way into our lives again. In my area this is my favorite time to go backpacking. Less creepy-crawlies, beautiful changing foliage, and not brutally hot during the daytime. A lot of other people feel the same, and outdoor treks may be more enjoyable soon in your area too.
However, the cool that makes being outside more enjoyable can also bring deadly consequences. So what can we do to protect ourselves from bitter cold?
If you get stuck in a survival situation, or want to avoid putting yourself in one while you’re camping/backpacking/canoeing/whatever these are the things that you need to remember.
Cold Basics
The human body runs at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Once we get chilled to the point where our temperature drops to 95 degrees hypothermia sets. The very first thing you need to remember about cold is that you must stay dry. Wet clothing can conduct the heat away from your body up to 50x faster than dry clothing. As a result, getting yourself soaked by rain, covered in snow, or drenched in sweat is a definite no-no.
Do what you can to avoid such situations. Whether that be utilizing snow shoes, wearing a poncho, or taking breaks in manual labor when you start to feel yourself beginning to sweat, do what you must to stay dry.
Proper shelter is often the primary key that will keep you from getting wet, and at the base level that starts with the clothing that you wear.
Clothing Choices
In the backpacking world there is a saying: “Cotton kills.” Once cotton gets wet, as clothes are known to do in outdoor weather, it completely loses all insulating properties. It does not regain them until it is completely dry which takes a long time. That is why when choosing outdoor clothing (hunting/fishing/hiking/etc.) you should avoid cotton at all costs.
 This:  Not This:
Wool is the number one natural fiber that will still keep you warm despite being wet, but it has a reputation for being itchy. Merino wool and alpaca fleece are natural alternatives here. Both are incredibly soft, not itchy, and will still keep you warm when wet.
When it comes to synthetic fibers polyester blends and polypropylene are some of the best out there. Fleece, Gore-Tex, and DryLete make great choices in clothing fiber type.
Keeping the “wet makes you miserably cold” principle in mind, buy boots that are waterproof. There are plenty of manufacturers out there making high-quality boots that don’t look like waders which you’ll appreciate. It can be hard to have fun when you can’t feel your toes.
It’s also important to realize that up to 30% of the body’s heat is lost through the head and neck. This being the case, you should wear a hat at all times when out in cold conditions, and do what you can to keep your neck covered. Cold hands? Gloves definitely help, but are inferior to mittens for warmth. Gloves keep each finger isolated, as well as the warmth emitted from each finger. With mittens, the fingers are allowed to warm each other. I’ve used old military surplus ones in incredibly cold conditions and they work great.
How to Sleep in the Cold
When it comes to camping in winter weather buy a bag rated as cold as you can get. I know some people get worried about overkill here, but they seem to quit worrying about that when it’s 3 AM and their teeth are chattering. If you get overheated with an “overkill” bag, it’s a very easy fix. That isn’t the case in reverse.
Secondly, mummy bags are much better at retaining heat than your traditional sleeping bag. A mummy bag has a tapered foot at the bottom meaning that you will sleep with your feet close together (like a mummy. Get it?). Yeah, you won’t be able to move about, but the smaller interior area means that there is less space within the bag that your body has to heat up. You stay much warmer as a result.

I avoid down-filled bags, as once down gets wet it loses the majority of its insulating properties. It’s definitely not a filler that you want to take on a canoe trip with you. Plus, down tends to clump up meaning there are going to be spaces within your bag that are not properly insulating your body from the cold.
Don’t expect to not have a miserable night if you don’t have a sleeping pad of some sort as well. The ground is cold, and it is going to want to suck all of the heat out of you that it possibly can to make itself warmer. It’s like a warmth vampire. A sleeping pad between you and the ground keeps your body heat in your body and away from creepy dirt vampires. They also provide a thin layer of cushioning between you and the ground as well, so it’s a double win for you to use one.
Gadgets
Anytime I’m out in the woods in the cold, I always carry HotHands and a space blanket with me. (I’ve never understood why they’re called ‘space blankets’. Is it because they don’t take up a lot of space, or is it because it looks like something an astronaut would use?)

I’ve found both to be surprisingly effective. On one ham-mocking trip I took, I woke up at 3 AM shivering like crazy thanks to cold butt syndrome (It’s a thing. Look it up.) Thankfully, I had a space blanket with me. Within minutes of wrapping myself up like a big bean burrito, I could easily feel the warmth returning to my body, and I spent the rest of the night actually warm enough to sleep comfortably.
It’s hard to use a space blanket while you’re hiking though. When I’m on the move I use HotHands. I’ll activate one or two and place them within the inside pockets of my jacket. You actually have to keep these things migrating from pocket to pocket or you can end up cooking yourself.
Don’t solely rely on these two items to keep you warm. You can’t go out hiking in a cotton T-shirt, get drenched by surprise weather, and then expect fantastic results from a HotHands packet and a space blanket. Don’t be stupid. Both of these items will definitely help to keep you warm, but you don’t want to be fully relying upon them if you can help it.
Wrapping it Up
Above all else, use your head. If you have some serious qualms about what you’re getting yourself into because the weather is looking more iffy than normal, then don’t go. That’s how you avoid putting yourself in a survival situation to begin with. When you are out though, following the above advice will help to ensure that you not only stay as warm as possible, but safe from hypothermia and frostbite as well.

Hi  Friends,
Our air temperature is in the low 20's F., right now.
A good, honest, friend named Greg L., sent this email/ message to me tonight and I enjoyed it so much that I felt that I needed to share it with my own readers, as I sometimes do.
If, in deed, Gold is going UP, UP, and Away,  Silver will do the same, at least to some extent, for other reasons.   I have heard 7 years ago that many say Silver might go up to $50 -- $200, and right now Silver is worth about $20., after you add in the tax and shipping charges.   Deal with MMX  --- MoneyMetalsExchange.com
In this article, 3 valuable explanations are given WHY it may be important to buy Silver Now !    I always do my research on-line, or in the library BEFORE I buy or invest in something, so I won't get "stung" or cheated, instead of learning the hard way --- when I was young and goofy....LOL.    My Dad also taught me many things when I was still at home on the farm, and I probably never thanked him enough.    I thought that I 'turned out, OK' so I used the same formula in raising my own kids  --- but that was just wrong headed, as I finally figured out later....  but I did try my best.   I guess that my 3- kids were just too wild, hard-headed and rebellious -- as the "apple never falls far from the tree..."    And "you can always tell a German --- but you cannot tell him much !"  Ha!   Also,  Father God loves all mankind and sacrificed His only begotten Son,  Yeshua,  Jesus Christ,  but the Father will only allow humans to enter Heaven 'if they are followers of Jesus !'    And this scenario COULD HAPPEN at any time, right now !   Or do you like to GAMBLE ???

As I told my wife,  Loretta,  for many folks,  History is a dull, lifeless, dry, boring subject,  but so many people lose out on many important points and sound reasoning,  truths, if they flunk that subject in school and afterward !   Because History is always REPEATED.   Like I have said before so many times,   'History always repeats itself,'  and the KJV Bible is PURE HISTORY !  Read now --- or pay later,  my friends.    Hell is not an option.    Hell is like the "Roach Motel,"  as people check in -- but they never check out.
Let us just understand one thing.... please,  If President Donald Trump doesn't take the  reins of our economy  soon ---  America will certainly collapse  and do a 'slow burn' --- an economic Melt Down !   But it just so happens that "SOMETHING BIG" is about to happen, IMHO, ON OR BEFORE,  January 1st, 2018.   But that is another true story for a different blog post.   Or who knows if I will even 'let the cat out of the bag ??'      Some of my close friends are more poorer than I am, so they have SOME excuse, of sort.    But the rest of the world will always find some lame excuse why not to invest in time, as always happens.  And that's life.

Warm Regards,
Thomas G. Schuckman

3 Great Reasons Preppers Should Buy Silver

preppers buy silver

Before the fall of the Roman Empire there were massive amounts of inflation.  This was due to the fact that the government had been debasing the precious metals.  It had gotten to the point where silver coins were truly bronze coins dipped in a silver coating.
This was the first form of fiat currency.  As the inflation increased the people of the empire were demanded to work more and pay higher taxes.  However, those who had held on to the pure gold and silver coins were able to fight off inflation.
Eventually the Roman Empire collapsed because it could no longer sustain itself and pay the debts that it owed.  Other countries began to invade the empire to gather spoils in order to pay off their debts.  Unfortunately it was citizens of the empire who truly suffered from starvation and disease from these wars.  Only those who were able to fight off inflation with pure gold and silver thrived during this time.
In many subsequent financial disasters throughout time gold and silver were used as a safe guard.  Yet today many of us place more value in a paper dollar that takes 4 cents to print.  There used to be a gold standard behind the dollar but that is no longer true.  The dollar is only worth the value that the government places on it.
Just like Rome all subsequent fiat currencies faced the same ill fate.  There has never been a fiat currency to truly prevail.  We must look back on history to get an understanding of our future.  There will be another collapse of the fiat currency.  So we must prepare.
Silver is considered the poor man’s gold.  You are able to purchase more amounts of silver than you can with gold.  However, there is a limited supply.  This is why it is called a precious metal.  Historically there is 12 to 15 ounces of silver produced to every ounce of gold.
All though there may be more silver produced there is a growing demand for silver.  Silver is used to produce multiple things including:
  • Cellphones
  • Cameras
  • Laptops
  • Mirrors
  • Monitors
  • It also has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of any element
We cannot continue to produce unlimited amounts of products using silver.  Research has even shown that the actual supply of silver is rapidly decreasing.  As the supply decreases with a steady demand there will be a higher price point that comes along with it.
Therefore as a prepper we must buy precious metals especially silver as a financial insurance against a failing economy and potential economic collapse.  The financial crisis of 2001 and 2008 is nothing like the Great Depression that we could possibly face again.

3 Great Reasons Preppers Should Buy Silver

  1. Eventual collapse of the fiat currency system
As in the story of how the great Roman Empire fell due to a collapse of the fiat currency system we will inevitably face the same fate.  Many Romans thought they were simply too great to fail.  Our mindset is the same today.
Only those who held pure gold and silver coins were able to fight off inflation during that time.  Here is a chart below that shows how silver consistently keeps up with inflation.
SilverPriceFarFromAnyInflationAdjustedLevel
During a collapse or financial crisis banks will either limit withdrawals or even forbid you from withdrawing your own money from the bank.  This happened in Greece in 2015.  Military soldiers were even stationed around the banks to protect them.  We also saw this in the economic collapse of Argentina.
Silver coins especially those that are minted can be quickly liquidated.  In the time of an emergency they can be melted down in exchange of the relevant price.  Many stores that will no longer accept fiat currency during a collapse will quickly accept silver instead.
Buying silver won’t be an investment that will get you rich quickly.  It is meant to be a safe guard and financial insurance.  However, during a collapse you can expect the price of precious metals to exponentially increase.
  1. The silver supply is decreasing
As I mentioned earlier, silver is used to produce multiple products.  Many companies such as Apple depend on silver to produce their monitors for their highly popular iPads.  If huge companies like Apple begin to lose access to something that causes them to lose profits then chaos will ensue.  They will of course drive the price of their products higher.
Silver is a precious metal.  Eventually the supply will dwindle.  Again this will cause the price of silver to sky rocket.  On top of that you have countries like China and Russia who are buying up huge supplies of these precious metals causing the supply to decrease even more rapidly.
This is why it is important to buy silver now before the prices are too expensive.  You will want to have your own supply just like any of your other preps.  Yes, you may have enough food to last you a year.  But what happens if you are robbed?  What happens if you need to buy some other important supplies during this time?  You will want to have some sort of currency as a backup.  As the saying goes, “you want to have backups to your backups.”
  1. Inevitable Price Correction
Not only is there a decreasing supply of silver on the market but there is price manipulation that is currently happening in the market as well.  Historically you were able to purchase 12 to 15 ounces of silver for the price of 1 ounce of gold.  However, there you can now purchase unheard of amounts of silver.  Currently you can purchase around 50 to 70 ounces of silver for the price of an ounce of gold.
Historically these prices have always adjusted themselves.  For some reason speculators are setting these unheard prices.  Eventually the market will adjust themselves.  This means that the price of silver will increase exponentially.  At that point it may be too expensive to even purchase silver.
The Type of Silver You Should Buy
The type of silver that you purchase will be dependent upon the type of buyer that you are.  As a prepper I recommend buying minted silver coins first.  This is because minted silver coins can be easily liquidated in an emergency.  They have a set price on them which means they can be used at stores to purchase items.
The minted coins such as the United States Silver Eagle will be trusted as real silver as compared to silver rounds or unrecognized mintage.  I started off buying minted Silver Eagles.  Regardless of what happens in the economy the coin will always be worth it’s weight in silver.
Junk coins are the next best option.  Although they are not 100% silver they do have about 90% silver.  Junk coins are coins that were produced before 1965.  In the event that there is an economic collapse junk coins will generally be accepted because they are widely recognized for their silver content.
Generic silver rounds are another great option.  However, without mintage it may be more challenging to liquidate than minted coins.  If you do get silver rounds I would recommend purchasing popular types of silver rounds such as the Buffalo.
The Best Time to Buy
The best time to purchase precious metals are when it is the cheapest of course.  At the time of this writing the silver to gold ratio is at a ridiculous 70 to 1.  That means that you can purchase 70 ounces of silver for the price of 1 ounce of gold.  This is why it is prime time to purchase silver.
Eventually the difference will be reconciled.  At that time it will be impossible to purchase huge amounts of silver.
Also, if you look at the state of our economy you can tell that it is time to purchase silver.  Inflation is increasing at astronomical amounts.  Millions of people are without jobs.  These are all signs of a looming financial crisis or economic collapse.
If you can’t afford to purchase huge amounts of silver I would recommend purchase at least 1 coin a week from SD Bullion.  They have no purchase minimum unlike many other stores.  They update their pricing to reflect the price of the market every couple of minutes.
You could purchase at local coin stores but I have noticed that they charge huge premiums on coins.  The most that you want to pay on a premium for minted coins is about $3 or $4.  I’ve seen local coin shops charge $6 to $7.
Now yes you will have to pay for shipping.  However, SD Bullion charges a flat rate of $7.77.  It isn’t dependent upon how much you buy.  So this means that you can purchase more silver or bullion and spend less on shipping as compared to other stores.
Leave a comment below if you have any questions about buying silver or about SD Bullion.  I have been purchasing bullion through them for quite a well.  So I am familiar with their products and services.
