Fake News and Free Speech

By Hal Lindsey

The battle against "fake news" has become a war on freedom of speech. Lots of countries, particularly in Europe and Asia, now have laws intended to eliminate inaccurate news presentations. But these laws have opened the door to suppression of legitimate political criticism and opinion.

Wenzel Michalski, the German director of Human Rights Watch, recently spoke of Germany's fake news law. He said, "It is vague, overbroad, and turns private companies into overzealous censors to avoid steep fines, leaving users with no judicial oversight or right to appeal."

Like Germany, the fake news law in France has only made matters worse. French judges can now order the immediate removal of whatever they deem misinformation during election campaigns.

Russia passed a law earlier this year imposing big fines for those who spread whatever the authorities consider fake news. Their law also fines anyone who shows "blatant disrespect" for the government online. Individuals can be fined over $6,000.

In every case, people wanting to restrict free speech used fear of fake news to get the laws passed. The European Union is taking it even further. They have developed a fake news warning system. It identifies so-called fake news, passes that information on to other governments, and pressures online platforms to remove such content.

Truth is absolute. But mere human beings don't know everything. Eyewitnesses to the same event can have wildly different stories about what they saw. Academics in the same discipline often completely disagree on the facts they're trying to interpret. In a democracy, the people ultimately decide for themselves. And they don't just decide how the facts should be interpreted. They decide which facts they will believe and which experts they will trust. When a government decides these things for them, that government ceases to be a democracy.

The US Constitution upholds the right of free speech in the First Amendment. For that reason, the US government cannot directly regulate most speech. But many in America are intent on finding ways to bypass the First Amendment. They have enacted a strategy similar to that of the European Union - massive pressure on service providers and social media platforms.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg told the Washington Post, "People worry, and I worry deeply, too, about an erosion of truth. At the same time, I don't think people want to live in a world where you can only say things that tech companies decide are 100 percent true."

That should not be a controversial position. But millions were outraged when they heard it. The government can't restrict speech, so these people hope to silence their ideological opponents using private companies. Some in government want to harass tech companies into suppressing any and all speech that might be deemed politically incorrect. And when the federal government wants to harass you, it can be intimidating to anyone. It seems to be working. We keep hearing of organizations, people, and opinions pushed further down in search engine results, unable to advertise, or being banned from various social media platforms.

It frustrates everyone to hear or read blatantly false information told as truth. But attempts to regulate fake news run into the same problems over and over. Who decides what news is fake, and what news isn't? Everyone has opinions. Whose opinions should override all others?

For Christians, this is a worldwide problem. The Gospel is not considered politically correct. Some people in power see the message of Jesus as a threat to their power. Other nations are run by people who see the Gospel as dangerous to society.

We need to stand up for free speech. More important, we need to proclaim the Gospel with clarity and love in every way we can. We need to be good stewards of the freedoms we have for as long as we have them.

Hello Friends,
Sometimes the posts, letters, emails and messages we carry are not as happy or laughable as we would want to send,  but many people can still benefit from them.  My post today on Dec. 17th, Tuesday, is just a suggestion, but I feel that I have learned a valuable lesson about a year ago when I wanted to send a valuable family heirloom, a large KJV Bible with valuable things inside, including some money to my daughter and grandkids in Colorado.  I insured the package for a mere $500., and sent my lovely wife to mail it for me,  but the contents inside [some coins] were worth a lot more, like $2000., at least.  After the empty torn open package arrived at my children's home in Colorado they notified the Post Office who said they made a search for it, and I have my personal beliefs about the honour and integrity of many postal workers... LOL, but the people up here in Norway, MI 49870 said that it would be a long process searching with a lot more red tape.   Bottom line, as I called the headwoman at our local, boondock, P.O., again today,  I just got some irate, short, explanations of why it was just a lost cause... and 'sorry about that' kind of blah.   Ha!  Ask me if I will ever trust this or any other postal system for any guaranteed service or even my insurance money which will never get to me.  My advice to anyone is to avoid sending anything of value, but if there ever is a 'next time' go-to FED-EX where the security is better.
And, I also don't appreciate the short, rude behaviour that I got over the phone, and I don't care if this is their 'busy time' or season!    I have had run-ins with these aloof people in the past when they could not/ would not even provide a simple chair for disabled Veterans and other old folks to sit and rest in their outer and inner lobbies at the small town of Norway, MI 49870!   And too many times a small-town clerk [ and sometimes other terms that rhymes with clerk come to mind...] think too highly of themselves when they are nothing but overpaid public servants at most.
In the meantime, I will try to get a few copies of my thoughts to upper echelon post office departments to see if there are better ways to keep their employees honest and hard working.

I know that for me and millions of hard-working people like me, we have paid our dues many times over, both in the military and a long life service of honest, hard work.  In fact, I have found that most people who were given a chance to earn a good living working for a short time at AMC/ Chrysler - Kenosha, WI., [where I retired from after 30.5 long years at age 54 -- besides working many other places and going back to college before and after]  ---quit because they said the work was 'too hard' or for the 'younger guys.'   Yes, there are so many jealous people in the world who are just plain lazy, and also too cowardly to join and serve in our Armed Forces.  And then they try to trip our Veterans up at every turn and make fun of their disabilities and nightmares.   Thank God that I still have my wits and writing abilities so that I can represent many of my fellow friends and combat Veterans who are now ageing, also dying at alarming rates nowadays!  Father God has blessed me in so many ways, as my good wife does a lot to help me with my physical needs and desires, and I try to reward and bless her with most of what I have.

Unfortunately, the KJV Bible clearly states that Satan the devil is the god [small "g" !] this world --  2nd Corinthians 4: 4., as he continues to mislead the majority of people in the world, also 1/3 of the fallen angels!  Beware.   Most folks in the world don't even know this or could care less.  True, biblical Christians who read and study know that their Salvation is near!  In fact, President Trump just may be the last good president to hold back the damnation of Satan, whether he knows and understands this or not!  Oh,  I know that he is very imperfect, and sins every day of this life, too, and has an unorthodox way of doing things,  but I think he means well and has accomplished many good things for our country.
My main thought is just that we should not be so ignorant as to think that everything in the world or even the USA will somehow get better after this duly elected president leaves or is forced out of office.  And if he is somehow forced out of office by all the bad Congressmen and women -- expect pure hell to visit the USA and elsewhere, as the liberal oinks will bury us in more debt and shame!   I've never seen a more hateful, spiteful bunch of 'human beings' in my life -- watching them on TV makes me sick and I can only tolerate a short time as they crowd out any other News of import.  Shame!

On the bright side of things, the temps where I live will get much colder tomorrow, like perhaps the single digits.  Smile.
Have a great day.

Warm Regards,
Tom Schuckman
