It is expensive to have our furry friend Sam too but we love him and treat him well;) And yes I grew fine tomatoes and even peppers, herbs and strawberries in containers last year. I used a couple of the " Topsy Turvey" planters but my containers did better. Once the tomatoes start growing the weight is too much in the upside down planters. My containers and my flowers did great in large pots with good drainage, tomato cages that Bill made, lots of watering and a bit of fertilizer now and again.
