Help with Sleep Apnea.

Hi Friends:

I am NOT promoting any products here today,  but since I also suffer from the deadly Sleep Apnea, that kills many people in the USA all the time, but the doctors usually just write off the death as heart attack or stroke....  duh.  Athletes who build up their bodies and especially the neck area [can't have any "pencil necks" in football, or risk injury to the neck, right?], and fat people, etc.  It cost me a broken neck, C1 and C2 Anterior, in 1997, and I am dang blessed to be alive and not paralyzed from that terrible truck accident caused by sleep apnea !!!  God MUST LOVE ME !   It was a hard way to learn, and thank God that no one else was injured !   I am NOT  'accident prone' or clumsy,  but many folks note that I have good eye/ hand coordination, good with tools, machines, motorcycles, etc.   
       If you even think that you might have SLEEP APNEA, go to a specialist and take the over night "Sleep Study" to make sure, one way or another.  It just happens to run in my family, and my brother and sisters also have this affliction.   Many folks just die in their sleep, in their 50's.  Beware.   I can also teach you how to adjust to the CPAP machine, with some 'self hypnosis,'  pretending that you are a jet pilot right before you fall asleep, and you need your 'oxygen' while you are 'flying' up high.   I learned this stuff from a Ph.,D, long ago in Milwaukee, WI., and it works for me.

I also noticed that the price of PM's [gold and silver] has gone UP !  Yipes!  When the SHTF, the common man won't be able to invest in PM's, and then it will be too late, after our American dollar will be almost worthless.  Trust me,  I used to be into big, wise investments $$$ when I was still working for AMC/ Chrysler, with my 401K's, and other Mutual Funds accounts,  but spent the last of it on Home Improvement, etc., Electrical goodies.  But now, my personal advice [ONLY as a friend] is to stay away from Bonds.  There are still a few good picks in Energy, Oil, Coal, Stocks, if you really do your research, but I am not into those types of investments anymore, sorry.   I just don't have the money to gamble...  lol.   My main investment is my wife, who goes thru or money like jelly thru a goose !  Ha!

The sore, opening/ ulcer on my lower Left leg above the ankle is still split open and not healing right, and a constant source of pain and itchiness.  The best thing I can do is to stay in bed with my leg elevated, I guess.   Prayers, requested for healing, please. 

Pastor Kevin Sullivan, gave a great sermon yesterday on the subject of the Rapture, and ran us all over the KJV Bible searching out many scriptures for proof and encouragement.  I think he does a great job in teaching the small flock of about 75 people that showed up in the freezing low temps. U.P. here...  brrrrrrr !   I try not to drink anything in the morning before church on Sundays, because the toilets are many steps down stairs, and I get winded from climbing them, and it takes a long time for me to catch my breath again.   I am just getting over a bad case of the Flu.  
     I bought a lot of fresh fruit yesterday after church service, to try and keep our immune system healthy and virus resistant.  I also suffer from 'cabin fever' and the Winter Blues,  but I just made a new friend at church and expect to take him out for breakfast or lunch sometime soon.  His name is Richard. 

I only get two pieces of toast in the morning for breakfast.  Meals here don't come regular, and I usually have to beg for food... lol.  She is too busy taking care of others.  What a life.   Other than that--  things are just fine.


Compression Stockings Ease Sleep Apnea: Study

Wearing compression stockings during the day may slightly improve sleep apnea at night, a small study suggests.
The benefits of the knee-high socks, however, failed to convince sleep specialists that they’d hit on a new cure for obstructive sleep apnea, which is a potentially serious condition.

In obstructive sleep apnea, breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep because the airway becomes narrowed or blocked. The condition affects 12 million Americans, raising their risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeat and diabetes. It also raises their risk of being sleepy and fatigued during the day, because they sleep poorly at night.

The gold-standard therapy for obstructive sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, device.

In the new study, 22 patients with obstructive sleep apnea who wore compression stockings during the day for two weeks saw their frequency of apneas decrease by 27 percent, compared to 23 patients who didn’t wear the stockings, Dr. T. Douglas Bradley and colleagues report in Sleep Medicine.

The authors call the 27 percent reduction “modest.” They say it reduced patients’ sleep apnea “from the severe to the moderate range.”

They did not, however, see any improvements in patients’ daytime alertness or sleepiness.

There are a number of reasons the airway may be blocked during sleep. For example, the throat muscles and tongue may relax, blocking the airway.

This new study points to another potential mechanism, Bradley told Reuters Health. He believes fluid can move from the legs into the neck, restrict the flow of oxygen and cause obstructive sleep apnea.

“Getting rid of excess fluid is one approach of treating sleep apnea,” said Bradley, a sleep specialist and professor at the University of Toronto.

Compression stockings, widely used to treat varicose veins and by workers whose jobs keep them on their feet all day, exert pressure on the legs and reduce fluid movement.

“This study highlights what we believe to be a new cause of sleep apnea,” Bradley said. “This is further evidence that it really is a mechanism that causes sleep apnea.”

But sleep specialist Dr. Jafari Behrouz of the University of California, Irvine, told Reuters Health he is not ready to prescribe the knee-highs to his apnea patients.

“At this point, I do not recommend stockings to treat sleep apnea,” said Behrouz, who was not involved with the current study.

The first thing he recommends for sleep apnea patients is that they improve their sleep hygiene by eliminating sedatives and alcohol for six hours before bedtime and by avoiding caffeine after lunch. He also advises that overweight patients try to lose weight and morbidly obese patients consider bariatric surgery.

He also recommends that patients use the gold-standard CPAP device when they sleep.

Some patients have trouble using it or do not like using it. A mouthpiece called a mandibular advancement device is an alternative that holds the lower jaw and tongue forward during sleep.

Snorers, especially men 50 years and older with a history of high blood pressure or stroke should talk to their doctors about their risk for sleep apnea, Behrouz said.

“The patient and physician can discuss what’s the best treatment for them,” he said. “For the majority of the patients, the best treatment still is the CPAP machine.”
